Backlinks
The perfect backlink is sitting in the middle of a keyword-rich, on-topic paragraph of text, on a topically related website with a high PageRank, on a topically matching page on your website, with a keyword as the anchor text, deep-linking back to our page, not to the homepage.
Topical relevance is important. If a site about dishwashers has a site-wide footer link back to your homepage, that backlink won’t count as much. If this site about dishwashers has an article that talks about how this dishwasher is used more and more by medical assistants throughout the States because of its cool medical features, and the backlink is sitting right in the middle of a paragraph with keywords such as “medical assistant”, “career as a doctor”, etc. in it, and the anchor text of the backlink is “how to become a medical assistant”, that is a better link because the PAGE is on topic with our page it links to. The SITE isn’t though; it’s about dishwashers, so this link is valuable to begin with, but it could be a lot better. This is called LSI.
Latent Semantic Indexing
LSI was introduced by G a few years ago and it basically states that it will value the importance of a backlink higher if both the domain and the page the backlink sits on is on topic with the site it links to. This becomes possible by categorizing the text that surrounds the link and applying a topical relation matrix that analyzes how much “dog” is related to “walk in the park”. Yes it gets that sophisticated, but the gist of it is that the source of the backlink is as important as its receiver.
